92% of girls all around the world have something they would like to change in their body. They want to be thinner. Tighter. Smaller. Prettier. Have longer hair. Bigger eyes. Tinier nose and better figure. They just want to be more beautiful in general. But why do they feel the need to change something that’s already perfect just the way it is?
And what do we have left to do, since the idea of an unrealistic and impossible body image is already stuck in everybody’s head?
As humans, instead of finding a cure to fix this, we always start by trying to find someone or something to blame, but maybe for once, instead of blaming it all straight on the mass media, we could dig a little deeper. If you really think this through, the media doesn’t set the goal body image, like it doesn’t decide what the newest fashion trend is or how bad is the recession that we are going through. The media is not the original source of our problems, even though it usually manages to cause the spreading and growth of those. In the mass medias we can only see a reflection of the ideas this generation has of the perfect type of a human, and specially a girl, body.
Somehow, during the last decades, the idea of a perfect body structure has become to be even dangerously thin and small. Only in the US over 10 million women are fighting against an eating disorder and that’s only the number of actually found diseases. And in proportion to US, in Finland the problem is just as bad. Women want the gap between their legs and a tiny stomach to show off no matter what, without even stopping to think if that actually is beautiful, not to mention healthy.
While media is not the deeper cause of the problem, it is definitively causing it to go worse. When there is these tiny models all around the internet, magazines and TV, women somehow forget to use their own brain.
What we need to do now, to not get any more women affected by the unreachable beauty standards, is to set our minds to match the reality. The fact is that we are all beautiful and if someone still feels the irresistible need to change something, it should really be thought through.
Slowly but surely, this is already happening. Every day you can find more and more fighting against the impossible beauty standards. Companies and individuals; men and women, are doing an important job, trying to fix the twisted standards we once created. Anyone can do it and everyone should do it, because only by steady work we can change and recover the whole problem.
It starts with us and then, as the media once made this problem spread, it can also spread the cure.
Love yourself, Eve X(oxo)
